Frequently Asked Questions report

The Exceptional Family Member Program is with you from initial identification and throughout the sponsor’s military career to help identify and coordinate services for you or your family member’s special medical or educational needs.

EFMP has three components:

  1. Identification and enrollment:  When a family member is identified with special medical or educational needs, those needs are documented through enrollment in the EFMP. Enrollment in the EFMP is mandatory for active-duty families who have a member with special needs. Members of the National Guard or reserves may enroll according to service-specific guidance.

  2. Assignment coordination: Enrollment ensures that a family member’s special needs are considered in the assignment process.

  3. Family support: EFMP Family Support assists families with special needs by helping them identify and access programs and services.

EFMP & Me is an online tool provided by the Department of Defense’s Office of Special Needs and Military OneSource for military families who have family members with special needs. With EFMP & Me, you get personalized access to resources and information about support services specific to your current need. Learn how to enroll in EFMP, prepare for a PCS or deployment, manage changes in educational and/or medical needs, and adjust to new life situations. EFMP & Me is here to help make life less stressful for you and your family.

Anyone looking for resources and information in support of a family member with special needs can use EFMP & Me. The checklists were developed based on research-identified user needs and preferences.

You may view this video to familiarize yourself with EFMP & Me before getting started.

Start by answering a few basic questions on the EFMP & Me homepage. These answers will help us provide you with checklists of guidance and information personalized to your needs.

Select your role. If you are a service provider or leader, you will need to log in with your Military OneSource account to access role-specific information.

Tap Get Started at the bottom of the screen. If you are a service member or family member, add your first family member with special needs, then click Save Family Member. On the next page, you can select the types of information you need, such as medical, education, EFMP enrollment, PCS, child care, accessibility, housing, etc. These topics relate to your interests, needs and major life events such as PCS and deployment. Tap View Checklists to see your results.

Checklists are then created based on the areas you selected. The checklists include important to-dos, tips and resources.

On the My Checklists page, you can view individual topics with associated checklists. You may also view all checklists at once in the drop-down at the top under Choose a Topic. If you have more than one family member enrolled in EFMP, you can filter your checklists by specific family members.

Add more family members by clicking the View Family Members button at the bottom, creating another family member profile.

Make sure to save your EFMP & Me checklists by logging into your Military OneSource account using the link in the top right menu. If you do not have a Military OneSource account, you can easily create one by clicking Create Account in the same menu. This will allow you to save your work and help you continue with targeted support from EFMP & Me.

View, download and delete checklists from the My Family Members page at any point. And continue to tailor the content to your needs by selecting Add Checklists under each family member.

You do not have to have an account to access the tool. However, an account is necessary to save your checklists and return to them later.

To create an account, you can:

  • Log in with the credentials of an existing Military OneSource account

  • Log in with a connected CAC logon

  • Click the Register Now button to create an account, then log in

Based on your inputs, checklists are created with tasks and tips in categories specific to your circumstances and needs. These checklists will help you navigate family life, find military resources and get connected to helpful support services.

Tasks are actionable items that you complete to finish the checklist. You can check a task off as you complete it or determine you do not need it.

Tips are part of a task and often include links to a range of helpful resources. They give you more information about the task, the EFMP or other useful materials. If leaving the EFMP & Me tool to visit another site, you will see a pop-up message confirming your selection and another window will open so you can easily return to EFMP & Me and your checklist when you are finished.

Individual tasks cannot be deleted from a checklist but you can check the item off as completed if you do not need it. You can save, view, download and delete entire checklists at any point by logging into your Military OneSource account.

EFMP & Me is designed to provide you with information and refer you to additional resources related to your various needs, life stages and military career events.

The EFMP & Me tool collects limited personal information, such as whether the checklists are for the user, their child or another adult dependent as users indicate that information on EFMP & Me. The tool also collects the user-reported EFMP enrollment status. However, we do not track or report EFMP enrollment or any other personal information by the individual. For instance, collected data will tell us how many users said they are enrolled in EFMP, but not which users.

If you create an account with Military OneSource, you will be asked for information about your areas of interest, including selecting a “role” as service member, family member, service provider or leader.
